318 points gap/timing

Hi all
I am trying to get my Charger to run a bit better and wondered if one of you helpful guys could tell me what the points gap and timing advance are on a '69 318. I know I should buy a service manual but need to see another pay day first.

Points .014"-.019" Timed at TDC+or-2 1/2 deg at idle Dwell angle 30 to 34 deg

TDC :shock: set the timing around 34 deg all in (at around 3000 rpm) with the vac pipe disconnected and plugged, this should give around 10-12 deg at idle.

Emissions settings, go slow settings LOL, you are factually correct but somewhat retarded :shock: (timing wise)

I am finding you want at least 12 degrees at idle. More with bigger cams. But you must limit the mechanical advance to 35 degrees max.

And for chists sake dump the contact points and get an electronic dizzy. You don't rub sticks together to light a fire do you?

Have you seen these MSD "ready to run" distributors?

They have everything built in. No need for a transistor on the bulkhead and extra wiring harness. Just connect it to the coil and away you go. 8)

You can easily customise the advance curve and the amount of advance. The weight springs are just under the cap.

Just to point out. You don't need a new voltage regulator for electronic ignition. That is just for the charging system.

Wil's regulator is great if you have the pre 1970(?) type mechanical regulator though. I saw the one Trev mounted on his Charger and it looked just like the original.

You cannot use a mechanical regulator with electronic ignition, they just don't keep the voltage accurate enough, any spikes and you're risking the ecu.

Our kit has a 2 year warranty on the coil and ecu but only if there is a electronic regulator fitted, if it's mechanical there's no warranty on anything.

I'd prefer to sell a reg with every ignition kit

Thanks for your help guys. Yes I will go to electronic ignition but the car has only recently come over and at present I am just doing enough to get MOT'd and registered.
