pistons in the right hole

i'm rebuilding the 360. The rod caps have dotted numbers stamped on the bottom. Can anyone tell me which order they should be fitted.
I've checked my 318 and it has no similar marks on the bottom of the rods.

You put them back on in the order they came off. Most people mark them in order to go this. Usually starting with #1 at the front.

Dave, what do you do if the engine arrives partially disassembled?

Most rods are usually marked 1 through 8. Caps are obvious with the notches for the bearing on opposite sides.

The notches for the bearing tangs on the rod and cap go on the same side as each other, just to clarify Kevs post. also it should be noted that the rods will be in 2 pairs of 4 as the thrust surface at the bottom of the rods is different one side of the rod to the other, also the pistons only go in one way, there will be a notch or an arrow pointing towards the front.

Just another little titbit. When you put the big end cap on the big end, you should be able to tell by looking / running your finger round the thrust surfaces whether they are the right way round. They must be perfectly even at the join. you can feel it if you get the cap back to front.

I was lucky, my pistons were numbered and had arrows to front, conrods and caps were stamped too so there was no mistake what went where.

Sorry, Alex. I got it the wrong way round. Curse the Drambuie and Dr Pepper!

Cheers guys, I think I have it sussed. Its a little dificult as the stamped con rod ends match my original markings. Its further confused by (I think) 2 different part numbers on the rods and that some rods have a physical number stamped on, which differs from the marks on the bottom of the rod cap. Confused? I am, machine shop said they were arranged correctly so here goes...
