brake booster advice urgently needed please

Post by Anonymous »

My 68 Charger (drums all round) needs a new booster (shot) and master cylinder (not to good). I cant find any in the UK, so am looking to the US.
There is a company (the paddock) advertising in a Mustang mag, selling a universal booster and m/cyl kit, I phoned them and spoke to a woman there and she reckoned it wil fit a Charger and comes as 7"single, 7"dual and 8" dual, and are priced $300 to $340.
She didnt inspire much confidence (even asked her to find an adult - like I can talk!), and I need to find out how this kit can fit different cars. It is cheap though so I am very interested.
Does anyone here know if this kit is fine for my needs?
Or can anyone let me know best way of sorting my problem? All advice greatfully received!

I'll leave others to comment on the 'universal' setup, but my advice is pretty simple - if you're not worried about making the car "non-standard" anyway, then get a new master cylinder and ditch the booster!!

I drove my Challenger for 17 years with manual drums and the pedal effort was fine. the braking was good enough (once) and then faded badly, but the servo won't affect that.
If you really want a non-standard servo then you may as well get one over here from a donor car. Didn't SteveB use a Volvo one or something on his 300??

Gavin, I could go down the non servo route but unsure how easy it is to convert power to non power brakes (linkages, set up etc).
Have seen a kit for non powered m/cylinder and front disks for price of servo combo first mentioned, wondering if this is a good option?
Dave, thanks for links - a little pricey, but may have to consider!
Steve, YES PLEASE!
Still more advice needed and accepted!

It is easy to go from power to manual brakes. Much harder the other way around if you don't have the right bits. Mainly the bellcrank.

Yeah, all you need is the manual pushrod. MP sells a new adjustable one, or dunc or someone might have one.

A choice between manual discs or assisted drums is NO choice IMHO!!
The discs are far superior. I've fitted manual discs to min FWIW.
