Shifter cable length and positioning

I've got a 68 Charger with a Quick silver shifter down to a torque flight 727 B does anybody know the length of the cable.
It's runs to close to the exhaust manifold and has melted so I'm looking to replace it.
Also does anybody know the routing of the cable, is there some sort of bracket or something to carry it down, to the box, mine might be missing something.

Hi fergal, they always melt thats the norm just try and keep it away from the exhaust as best as possable. if its a B+M cable they only come in certain lengths you will have to take it off and measure it, I just cant think off hand of the popular size maybe 60"

4ft and 5ft are the popular sizes , i run 4ft cable on my challenger , keep as close to the block or box as poss and if need be cover it with some heat insulation wrapping hope this helps

Hi jim,I was going to try and fit some sort of head resistant sleeve on the last one I changed then I noticed in the instructions it said not to do this as it held heat in and made matters worse.those headers look nice by the way are they new?

i reckon if you keep the cable close to box as i have managed you prob dont need it, headers am new ceramic coated (made by hedman) nice pieces of kit, also put a shifter in at last

Nice to know it's the norm, pratted about for ages with it.
Might try some sort of coiled metal cover for it, keep it off, the headers, not to bad at the moment, I had a sparky make me a new starter cable and it's holding it off at the moment.
Thanks for the picture, could do with one of those transmission inspection covers too, keep forgetting about that.
