Window Regulator spring tension?

Post by witorque »

Does anyone know how many turns of tension should be pre-loaded onto the window regulator spring for an E Body front door glass?
Any tips on how to do this, beyond 1/4 turn cannot be done by hand, looks like a special tool may be required?

I just took one off a B-body.

It unwound just over half a turn, but less than three quarters.

I got it back on by hand though.

I sorted it in the end. I guess the B Body would have less tension with its smaller lighter window.
The E body seems to have around 3/4 turn. I made up a tool out of 1 x 1/4" flat steel, drilled and tapped with 2 M6 bolts at 2 1/2" pitch. Holding the regulator in the vice and engaging one bolt in the spring hook and the other against the coiled up spring, it pulled around to the locating pin 1st attempt. The M6 bolt gets trapped between the hook and the pin, but can be pryed out with a screwdriver.

Well done to you - I tried the same thing and ended up bending the spring end over :( . It bent back again but then I got worried that if I'd weakened it the consequences of it letting go while installed would be pretty nasty (smash window and probably dent door - there is a LOT of tension in that!)....so I got another regulator with spring installed, not my usual modus operandi.
So nice one, wish you had posted that about a year ago!!
