A great app for the iPHONE is called "Pocket Dyno+" and allows the phone to accurately measure acceleration times via the GPS fuction.
Check out the video I got from Sean Machado, which, shows his Daytona in the clip.

Dunno about the iPhone version but I agree if it is GPS based it won't be much cop.....are you sure it is not just the accelerometer, that is all you need and that is what my G-Tech uses.
I make the distinction because I believe there are accelerometer-based apps for the iPod touch, which is cheaper and you don't need the phone contract etc.
the science is good, no reason not to be accurate to a tenth or so in the quarter, as long as you are on a level road.

Just added for interest only and as I have an iPhone, thought I would use it for fun. Not too sure of the accuracy, either and would invest in the proper gear, if, I was at the strip. Still only £7.49 for the app download, now just got to find a deserted street.
