Interesting Oz Factoid

Post by Kev »

When we came over we were not prepared for the lack of daylight compared with the UK.
Here are the longest and shortest days for Brizzy, obviously polar opposites of UK, and the corresponding UK times. No wonder everyone gets up early over here........(still can't do that though!! )

Sunrise And Sunset Times in Brisbane, Queensland
Longest day 22 Dec 2008 - Sunrise 4:50 AM - Sunset 6:43 PM - Length of Day 13h 53m
Shortest day 21 Jun 2008 - Sunrise 6:38 AM - Sunset 5:02 PM - Length of Day 10h 24m

Sunrise And Sunset Times in London, England
Longest day 21 Jun 2008 - Sunrise 4:43 AM - Sunset 9:22 PM - Length of Day 16h 38m
Shortest day 22 Dec 2008 - Sunrise 8:04 AM - Sunset 3:54 PM - Length of Day 7h 49m

Hmmm! I've just proved it ain't a lot different!!!!

Come north, young man, and add at least an hour and a half onto your longest day. Doesn't get dark here till 2230 or so in summer.

In fact, if the skies are clear (cloudless) it doesn't actually go completely black.

However, winter days are shorter.

Yep, the closer you are to the equator, the less the variation between shortest and longest days.

However, I think I'm right in saying that on 21 March and 21 Sept, when the sun is directly over the equator, everyone in the world has the same length of day (about 12 hours).

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong...
