Converter Problem?

Post by Steve Chapman »

Set off for York today and as soon as i pulled off i noticed a clicking noise coming from what i thought was the offside front wheel. Ah it will be a bit of twig or wire caught hitting the wing as it goes round. Stopped and had a look, found nothing so i set off again slowly and the noise was still there getting faster as i drove along. Stopped again ,jacked the front up and spun the wheels,no noise. Thats when i thought Converter. Took it back home and jacked the back up and sat it on axle stands and ran it. Noise there again so it has to be a converter problem methinks or a problem in that area . Could it be converter bolts coming loose and catching or a fault with the converter itself. If it means pulling the box out i might aswell fit an upgraded converter as the one in is stock as far as i know. What would any of you suggest as a performance upgrade ,i know you have to take into account rear end gearing and cam lift, but as a general rule whats the stall speed etc i should be going for . Also when it comes to pulling the box i could do with some advice on the best way and any shortcuts or pitfalls to watch for. I havent had much to do with Autos before now ,even at work as waggons with em fitted are few and far between. Sorry for being so long winded,Im in the dark with this, all advice gratefully received.

Jack it up & check the vertor bolts , not uncommon for them to come loose , especialy if lock tight was'nt used on em.

Thanks Adam, i have looked into the problem via the US forums and a few have said the same ,is there an inpection plate i can see them through and tighten them up. Hopefully this will all at will be. I always look at the worst case scenario when i know naff all about stuff. Thanks

Pull off the dust shield behind the sump pan (4 bolts) , they may look tight but check em anyhows , if there slightly loose the flex plate will rattle against the vertor , if any are loose take em all out & lock tight em.

If you get a 2nd pair of hands you can get the motor cranked over to get to each bolt , REMOVE THE COIL LEAD FIRST.

Chip.the bo;ts only have to be marginally loose to not clear correctly. I had this a while back and loctite (a Must!) and a good spanner rectified the issue.
Regarding convertors, post up all the usual e.g cam spec, rear diff, tyres, intended use and i'm sure the chaps will pitch in.

I removed my trans last year, very straightforward. Helps to have a trans jack or a a pile of timber and a half assed trolley jack (don't ask...)
Biggest problem i had was trying to get the trans crossmember out as the bolt were very tight and kept getting stuck.
Hopefully the convertor bolts will be the cause :thumbright:
