think that means 68 440 high compression/high performance you need to run good fuel in that and some octane booster. the mtr did get a check over before it was fitted, think it also has highway gears in the rear about 2.94 ratio good top end
Thanks for the info, looks like i have an engine built on 7th october 1972 & it was number 29 built that day,H.P checks out as high performance, havnt managed to find out what the 526 in front of the Hp is for yet,2.94 ratio gears would add up Dunc, it will cruise happily @ 80-90 on the motorway.
Thanks to both of you for the info Adrian.
I think he was correct initially in that he read the correct numbers as the date and daily sequence number. Although Jim is correct (of course!) that it would be October 1971 for a 1972 model year.
You can confirm this by looking at the date cast into the side of the block. It was probably cast in August or September 1971.
What those other numbers are though has me stumped.
I'm on shakey ground here, but i am quite sure you have some things wrong.
I am sure the build date is 26 May 1972. Check the casting date on the left side of the block near the starter motor, - this will be some months before the build date.
Otherwise I am quite sure the build date would be in 10,000 day calendar displayed in an eight figure format, but this is rarely seen on an engine as late as 1972.
For example a 440 engine produced for the 1972 model year may have the 10,000 day code as follows: PT44037230029 this would indicate the 29th 440 engine assembled at the Trenton engine plant on 7th October 1971. - But i don't think this is the case with your engine.
At this moment i don't know what HC 10729 means. HC might mean high compression i suppose (probably does), - but 10729? To break it down as the 29th engine built on the 7th October is certainly not correct. For one thing Mopar never used that format as a date code, and anyway 107 would be January 7th, not October. (A three figure code for October 7th would be A07.) Other date codes were used by Chrysler, for example 417 could also be October 7th (day 7 of week 41) but this was not used on engines.
Do you have a VIN number stamped on the pan rail on the right side of the engine?
