Transmission Problem

I've got a bit of a strange problem with the transmission on my Charger. It's a '67 auto 383 with three on the tree.

When the engine/transmission is cold you stick it in gear and the car pulls fine but as it warms up, it's like the clutch is slipping and it won't go anywhere. I can't be sure but I think there may be a small leak somewhere on the trans does this sound likley?

I've never owned a yank before so this is all pretty new to me. Does anyone know of any specialist around Croydon who may be able to help me out

I`m sure you will come to realize that I am not a "tech head" on here,but I would make real sure the fluid level is OK before using it again and risk doing more damage.

You can see the fliud level is OK when cold. As it warms up the fluid goes really transparrent and it's difficult to see it.

You have to check the fluid when the engine is HOT and idling in neutral. You also should hold the car on the brake and go into each gear position a couple of times before measuring.

It does sound like you are low on fluid. Don't over fill it though.

A common leak on these is the seal on the input shaft in the bellhousing. You sometimes get a leak at the tailshaft too.

That's an understatement! mine seems to lose it as fast as I put it in

At least it always has fresh fluid though

I put the new seal in! I think there should be a core plug in the slip yoke to stop it coming past the splines but US Auto don't agree and won't tell me what size plug it is or where to find it. Strange, they have usually been quite good!

Triple b, when i've 'lost ' gears in my autos its always been low fluid levels. Hope yours is as simple to fix.

Bratfink, I've got a prop here that has a "Plugged" yoke on it, it's 54" from the uj centres and it might bolt straight in as it was in Pete's Barracuda when it had the 904-71/4" combo (don't know if barracuda and Aussie charger are the same wheelbase length), Have a word with Pete about it, it should get you out of the chit!

99" wheelbase on the Aussie A body. Is that the same? If not can the slip yoke be transfered to my UJ?

106" on a Barracuda I believe, so yes you could swap the yoke over.

Thanks for your help guys, found the problem and she's now fixed. The hose that connects to the cooler at the bottom of the rad was loose. Now I stink of oil as I spilt a load of fluid on the manifold filling it up again, smoke everywhere

Still gave me an excuse to take it out to burn it off

Getting the level right is alot of mucking about, but it was well worth it. 8)
