Split mono leafs

Post by Mick70RR »

Fitted Calvert split mono leafs today. There's a bit of side to side play at the front spring hanger, less than 1/8" maybe 1/16". Is this normal?

They are fitted with ally bushes in the front and a steel bush is fitted inside with a thick washer each end . The steel bush is the right length for the hanger but the washers don't take up all the side play.

ive never fitted these so cant be 100% sure but i thought the use of aluminuim bushes is limit any side movement by the spring, reckon you might be makin a couple of spacers, even fitting poly bushes you get no movement :thumbright:

I think the washers are replaced when Caltracs are fitted with the triangular brackets. Maybe the brackets are a bit thicker.
Took a few pics while I was out.

Forgot to say, they are one inch over stock height but they have lifted the car 1 1/2" at the wheelarch. Guess the 40 year old springs had sagged a bit.

Wheels are 10 inch with 5 1/2 inch backspacing. 275/60/15 Coopers fit with no problems but the same size BFG drag radials are a lot wider and they were rubbing on the outside of the wheel well. I'm hoping these springs have lifted it up enough to stop the rubbing, no sign of it today and I was trying by best to wear the side of tyres out.

I did buy some cheap hub caps but I think it looks better without them fitted.

Looks real hard Mick & sits just right. :thumbright:

You're right about the triangular bracket that takes up the slack , can you not make another spacer to take up the 'play'? , i think the rear end would wobble & get out of shape & high speed?

I use the 10" wheels with the 4" backspace , if anyone sits in the back the tyre rubs the wheel arch lip , only way to cure this is to wind the caltracs up but this makes for a rough ride.

Was fitting the 29X12" slicks & they would'nt fit , so got hold of some centrelines with 5" backspace & they cleared pretty good , i scolloped some of the wheel arch lip so both tyres clear ok with weight on the rear.
