Electric fan postioning?

Post by Anonymous »

Hi all,
Just fitting an aftermarket alloy radiator and electric fan to the charger, I notice alot of folk put the fan on the inside of the engine bay.
I am struggling with the space but do have space at the front, is that ok to put it there? Is it going to make differance?
Thanks
Morgan.

personally i would not use electric fan on an American car (tried it before!)
and if you REALLY MUST, put it behind the rad, plenty of space, in fact i had two in my Charger.

Alternator just couldnt keep pace with the fans, and the headlamps and eveything else on at the same time.

When you need the fans the most is sitting still in traffic. Then the alternator is putting out almost no current, when you need it most!

try to put the fan engine side off the rad most will fit, this way it does not impede the air flow through the rad to start with and obv make sure the fan is sucking through the rad drawing to rear off car, you wont have a problem charging with that big alter

Most people say that fans suck better than they blow, so putting on the motor side would be best.

Obviously the motor direction needs to be reversed if you mount it as a blower :D
And depending on your fan that may or may not be possible - just checking!

Cheers Guys,
Because of the radiator, there was just not enough roof for the fan.
It mounts on the front fine, it a 16" fan which I had to reverse the blades in the right direction.
Tried it out, its got some kick! Managed finally to bolt on the huge alternator so I should have no problems charging.
Thanks again

Mogwai, welcome to my own personal hell! I got a 16" and had to remove the mechanical pump to get it to fit. When I thought the electric pump wasn't up to the job I tried to turn it into a blow and stick it on the front, only to find that there wasn't enough room.....to cut a long story short (too late) and not wishing to repeat and existing thread, all is well, but think yourself lucky, as the 13" cannot be reversed by changing the polarity and swapping the blades around (so kenlowe tell me)....but then that probably would have fitted in the first place!

I guess you me and neil would have some tears to shed over a pint on this one! I just wish I had bought one of Neils spal fans to match up with the rad in the first place.

There are plenty of good cheap fans to be had in breakers yards these days.Look for either turbo or air con cars as they seem to be the ones with the most capacity.
I have a pair(in a shroud) from a Mondeo(air con) and they can bring my temp down from 180 to 150 in 5 mins no problem.True they take some current, mine need a 16 Amp fuse each but I have a Japenese alternator fited which gives as much charge to the battery at 900 RPM as 2000RPM.
No use to the matching Nos guys but does us use what you can afford people a treat!! :)
