Holley carbs
Took the holley off today to see why it's running so rich. On tick-over , fully warmed I get constant black smoke like the choke is on. Checked the float heights. Air filter on or off. Carb is o-1850-2 about 600cfm? vac sec. Any ideas? no I'm not in the market to buy some posh new carb either
Also on the balance pipe between float bowls should it have any type of seal, orings or similar? Now need a gasket set so who has them? Manifold is Offenhauser 360 dual plane.

Yes there is a o ring at each end of balance pipe.
Is the fuel level set right for sure, sight plug out engine idling if mechanical pump. pump on if electric, engine off
have the mixture screws been moved have you tried adjusting them, Out = richer. In = Leaner. adjust both equally, start 1 turn out from lightly seated and work on it from there
is it electric or mechanical fuel pump,
what is it set at if electric
any blocked filters or lines

Interesting point there on the 'o' rings . Theres none on mine and it didn't leak
I'll get a service kit then.
Allkiller - Idle screws tried from 1/4 turn to 3 turns out no real change, floats set on tick over and mech pump fitted. Car has stood since '97 but no real muck in carb.

Did this car run ok before you stood her up ?
What is it idle rpm,
if the mixture screwa dont make any difference then, the kerb idle is not set properly and exposing too much of the transfer slots causing you a problem,
use as little ide screw as possible to get car to idle. you want as little butterfly opening as poss to just expose transfer slots.
make sure the butterflys are opening and closing properly and not sticking. and are clean at the edges.
it also takes the smallest amount of muck in the carb to start causing problems
Are all your vacuum lines connected up properly and to the right ports, and unused ones plugged.

i have had holleys do that before, darned unreliable things .
the 'balance pipe' i think may be the fuel supply pipe to the other float bowl, put some grease or someting on the o-rings when u gettem (assuming grease is ok on those rubbers if they are ok for petrol)
i have a holley carb or two here if ther are any specific bits you want off them

I always get big strong backfires , ask Mrs
No, not had any backfiring probs , always starts well just runs so rich . sump oil smells like petrol so not gonna run it till prob solved. only bought the car in nov. and it was running and just driveable. I know nothing of it's history except it lived in Herne Bay and Canterbury and the previous owner was Mr Tony Newton. Visibly the only mods are the Holley and the Offenhauser dual port plus Blackjack headers. Who knows what cam or other mods, not even sure it's a 318 could be a 360. if the power valve is the floppy thing in the side of the front float chamber the I think that might be the answer

No the power valve screws into the block of the carb,
take off front fuel bowl to access it, it unscrews be gentle with it, replace with same rated valve, should be stamped on side of valve on the flats.
it sounds like you are pouring gas into the motor because of the fault, and washing the cylinder walls down, dont run the motor anymore until you sort out the carb and change the oil,
Coz you will have very thin / non protecting, lubricating oil.
You can even get an internal engine fire, this will destroy your motor.
