small block valve train

Should there be anything in-between the rocker arms to prevent them from rubbing together?Mine appear to be touching, but if I put a screwdriver between them and twist.it creates a gap.
Obviously (to anyone who knows what they`re on about) this only occurs between the pairs on each cylinder. :?

No spacers on a small block, big blocks however, do have them! The stock pressed steel rocker arms on a big or small blocks are pretty nasty with a lot of slop in them even when new, also there is not much accuracy when it comes to rocker ratio, they are all over the place. Plenty of budget roller rocker set up's on ebay these days, a definate improvement even with a hydralic cam.

No recommendations as such Rich, but here's a few things to consider,

Don't buy Crane, overpriced and poor quality.

Whichever ones you buy make sure they have a solid spacer to align them rather than springs.

On a street car such as yours, avoid arms with roller bearings at the rocker shaft, these will fail in time and make a right old mess as the bit's go round the engine.

Most roller rockers require that you change to "cup" style pushrods.

Get a new pair of hardened rocker shafts.

Comp cams have stainless steel roller rockers that work with your existing pushrods, these might be the best bet as regards "fit and forget" but probably not the cheapest.

CAT roller rockers are very, very cheap, but I have yet to read any bad reports about them, just don't expect 'em to last forever!

When you fit 'em make sure they clear your rocker covers, there's sometimes an issue with the internal baffles, a doubling up of the gaskets usually sorts it.

That's about all I can think of, it's your choice, spend wisely grasshopper!

hi there

i personally bought a set of the comp cams rockers , nice cast items, well made and fitted a treat and look great

also bought the mopar performance aluminium rocker shaft hold downs for better clamping and from an engineering point of vies they hold the roker shaft better with less distortion as they sprread load more.

try of ebay from the good old USA as mine cam from there and shipping was about ?30 and if you find the right seller will lable parts up as samples so don't pay the import duty!!!!

Rich, I assume you've tried running the motor up with all the accessory belts off? Alternators have a nasty habit of squeeking when the bearings dry out... I like to use a billet rocker hold downs too, hey that could be another one for Trev!
