Are the american style number plates legal and if they are, where can i get some from.

DIGIT SIZES - The main digits are available in three sizes. 50mm for up to ten characters, 60mm for up to eight characters, and 80mm for seven characters or under. Although 80mm is the DoT regulation height for number plate digits, our plates do not conform to width and spacing requirements and are intended for show or for use in conjunction with standard plates.

If you don't go silly with slogans and if you don't have too many digits to squeeze on then they look close enough to avoid getting any hassle from the Police.

Cars that cannot use a full sized plate are allowed to use a smaller plate these days.

Mick, if you are worried about getting pulled for having American plates, the law states that imported cars with the small number plate facility can legally use the smaller numbers and plates used on motorcycles.

And depending on the year of the car, you can of course have white or silver letters and numbers on a black background.

I used yellow on black California style States Plates and policemen that I saw didn't appear to take much notice, I think they were more interested in plates that had been buggered around so much you couldn't read 'em.

Moving all the numbers around so they spell something silly can result in a two grand fine and your number being taken away...people tend to forget that they don't actually own a "cherished" number, only the right to display it.

A mate of mine was using yellow on blue style plates on his custom Beetle and he got pulled every day for a week until he changed them.

I have just got the car date registered with a little help from Matt H, as it was on a 78 T before.
The DVLA guy told me he'd sorted me a 6 number reg which was good of him considering i didn't ask for that.
I quite like yours Dave, is that black and white?.

Yes mine is white on black which you can use if your car is pre-Jan 1973 I think?

White or silver on black is totally legal pre '73.

Iv said this a many times now colour and size don't come in to it anymore on any none EU car and of the age of our cars I had blue and yellow CA plates and now have black and yellow CA plates NO PROBLEMS

Police are over zealous here as well, the car will be barely road legal anyway, so i'm not looking to attract any unnecessary attention.
What is the situation regarding exhaust.

From my MoT manual;
A silencer in such a condition,or of such a type,that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition.

I don't believe that there is an actual law saying you have to have a silencer but due to young lads in the 70s wizzing around the streets on their unsilenced mopeds you can be done for causing a nuisance if it is too loud.

But as long as you have some sort of silencer on there you will be OK.

they get away withit But they only know what they know and will not back down evern when they are wrong

unfortunately neither will I

I have been in some right hum dingers with the plod in the past

but I will only argue if I know I am spot on

just check the new MOT law as the police have to follow the rules too but as we all know the law is verry slow on the up take at times and way too FAST at others
