Miles , get the crank checked before you scrap it , the crank in the 605 was bent .010" , was fine after a clean up , if your crank is .010" under then another .010/.020" may be fine.
Was there clearance between flex plate & convertor before bolted up? , did the thrust bearing wear on both sides or just the rear? , hopefully the crank is ok & just the thrust bearing worn.
The convertor overheating may have damaged the bearing , have a look @ the back of convertor for any signs of it scraping the bolts on the transmission.

OK update!
Sitting on my garage floor is a newly rebuilt 360 motor (thanks to Mike for crank/piston installation courtsy of Her Majesties finest
reground crank at +20
New high comp flat top pistons and rings as the bores cleaned up fine. All new bearings and gaskets.
If it ever stops raining the motor will go back in this week. Should finally give me the compression to make the most of the new cam and air Gap inlet.
All the above will be accompanied by a newly rebuilt rear with 3.55 gears and Powertrax locker.
If that lot dont get me into the 13s at the hot rod Drags i'll give up

OK,for those still listening here is the current stste of play.
fitted new radiator and holley Street avenger 670 carb and started her up again.
One small carb fire later, adjust timing and she runs a treat. The previous 'bag of spanners' sound dissapeared as obviously the motor likes to run on all 8 cylinders.
Only problem is a fuel leak. cant believe that Holley still provide rubber pipes and T pieces. I now need to fit a fuel rail, but I lent it to a mate1
anyway, for those who dont want to read all the back pages, current motor is:
365 CI
flat top pistons (9.5 -9.7.1 compression)
XE258H Comp Cam
Reground crank +20
Eddy Air Gap inlet
Holley 670 V/S carb
sparks by FBO
Twin H pipe system TTI
lightly ported heads with 3 angle valve job
Just need an MOT now after sorting glitches
