The front end looks like your normal rs232 control screen like we program to use in our lecture theatres. This will send rs232 code signals to a switcher which everything else is connected to. The program in the screen unit tells the switcher what channels are on or off at any one time or will switch things in sequence for you if say one thing has to be on before the next thing.

People like AMX sell this sort of control system in the UK.

The digital sound desks at work are like this to....bloody nightmare when you need to change something quick in a live show....diving through menus to find the right control  ...in a live race situation i bet the switches are more user friendly...and faster

would be like your Tom Tom in the sun...impossible to read too

rs232 commands do what your TV remote (or any other) control does.

Only using just two wires (or three if you require status feedback from the device) so they are not converted into a IR signal and back like in a wireless remote.

For devices that are not normally controlled by remote controls you simply use a kind of relay or switch box to work anything you like.
