Check both faces are flat with a straight edge.
Check for hairline cracks and porous areas.
Can water come up the boltholes??? don't assume it can't check it, if it might be put some sealer on the bolts.
Wildmans charger has had the rocker cover bolts drilled out at some point and inserts fitted, on two of em the're straight into the water, no problem if studs are fitted, but the inserts weren't sealed before they were fitted hence a water leak that can only be cured with a little rad weld or rust
Also if sealer is used on the gasket overtightening could split the gasket??
I've got Cometic thermostat gaskets and if they leak there's definetly a problem, let me know if you want one, ?1.20 with first class postage
