My ammeter's doing weird things..

Post by Anonymous »

Driving the Fury back from cornwall, the ammeter started flickering about, then stayed on about half way to 'Charge' . Far higher than it ever has. Then it gradually got higher and higher. I decided to drive with headlights on as i was worried it was overcharging. It calmed it down a bit. Then i had to put the blower on full to keep the needle anywhere near the middle of the gauge. Later I had to slow down to about 60 for the rest of the way just to keep the gauge in the right sort of place. Car got back ok, battery not boiled dry etc. Tested the volts at battery when engine running, very low, only about 13 even with a load of revs. Alternator getting very hot. Volts at back of alternator about 15.5. Very odd. Any ideas?

Anyone know if the ammeter has a shunt or if it has just really thick windings?

aah sussed the problem, it was the pesky bulkhead plug, where the main feed passes through into the car, it had corroded and gone high resistance and was causing all the problems, hardly any charge was finding its way to the battery, it was being used to heat up that connector plug!
