Rover auto box (BW35), anyone know 'em?

Post by db »

The Truk is gettin a bit tired on gearchanges, particularly when cold.
Sometimes pulling away, or changing from 2nd to 3rd it revs (like clutch slip) then changes with a thump.
Fairly sure the fluid level's ok and it's recently been changed ( though it's not the original dipstick so i'm not 100% sure :? )
In all this house-moving malarkey i've lost my Haynes so i dunno how to check bands are tight or anything like that.

It has been working hard lately- pulling a lot of weight and gettin the motor a bit hot & bothered.
No-one will believe you...

You need part 2

torqueflite for 6 cylinder cars

i.e a BW 35 with taxi pack upgrades

No its a chrysler site

but that link takes you to a VH valiant manual
VH valiants with 6 cylinder engines used a Borgwarner 35 gearbox

hence if you want to adjust the bands on a BW 35 gearbox
the file called part 2 will tell you all you need to konw about service and adjustment

aussie Borgwarner 35 is a toughend box it has the taxi bands and line pressures...

if its not working right you can also shim the pressure springs with 1 pence pices to make it shift faster.

which also wears it out faster

Rover engines ...mmmm no idea

Thanks Dave :thumbright:

Just clicked the link and got it straight away- perhaps cos you're signed up?
Anyway the info seems to relate to mine and my symptoms point more towards the engine needing a tune-up than an actual trans fault.

Dammit and i thought they thrived on neglect & abuse

Cheers Dunc.
I've since found it had sprung another leak so the fluid was a bit low.
My throttle cable bracket had bent so wasn't gettin full throttle.
The carbs are flooding due to the needles & seats worn out.
The unhappy pulling away when cold is most likely down to the choke- the cable outer snapped a while ago so i ran the inner out under the hood and stick my arm out the window and yank on it. Cold tickover is a bit erratic...
Once i've worked my way through that lot i'll have a better idea if there's actually anything wrong with the box at all!

Fluid was down about a pint and a half, not had chance to road test properly but another odd symptom is that when it refuses to shift 2-3, if i drop the throttle it will shift

I have a BW35 out of a Jag that I was going to fit to the Rover 3.5 in my Landrover if you need a replacement.
