TF904 repair info or rebuild cost please

Post by VGVIP »

Hi.

I seem to have a similar problem to 68valiant had in this thread:

http://www.moparuk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=31295

My story is:
Put about 1 pint of fluid in on Sunday (used DII fluid - hope this is correct for Mopar!).
Have driven about 50 miles since then.

Tonight it lost all drive in all forward gears and reverse after driving 10 miles.
Drained off the one pint, in case it is a problem with the fluid level. Problem is still there.

Is now at the point where it wont move forward or backward when at running temp.
Let it cool down for 15 min or so and it will creep along.
It's about 2 miles from home on the side of the road.... hope it may make it home when cold tomorrow morning.
That is if the MOD don't blow it up, it's near MOD land out my way.

Any exact ideas what will cause this?

And to prepare myself for the worst.... and prices for rebuilt TF904?

I see we have a few trans experts in the club, I would appreciate your input.

Thanks in advane
Steve

Have you checked the fluid level as per the manual? (Excuse the pun! ;) )
Gearbox to operating temp, run through gears at idle, parking brake hard on(!), select N, check level. Is the fluid still looking like watered down blood? I'm sure an expert will be along shortly! :thumbright:

Hi Kev.
Yep did all that... even on level ground !
Needed a bit on Sunday, hence the top up. And removal again today >50 miles later.
The level readings I get seem a bit hit and miss. Some way too high it be real.
The VG manual (904 auto section) lists that my problem could be for the following reasons:
NO DRIVE IN ANY POSITION
1) Low Fluid
2) Low hydraulic pressure
3) Oil Filter clogged
4) Valve body malfunction or leak
5) Faulty oil pump
6) Clutch servos sticking or not operating
7) Torque converter failure.

Just had a bloody Chinook rattle the windows flying over in the last hour, hope the buggers are not off to waste the VG!

Think I may have got it back on the road for the time being.
Dropped the pan and changed the filer tonight (Baccaruda supplied a filter and gasket to me months ago - I never got around to change it).
So this may have been prevented if I serviced it sooner.

The oil was dirty black, a little bit of fragments stuck to the bottom of the pan.
About 6l of fluid drained out of it including the torque converter and about the same amount of fresh fluid went back in. So I don't think it was a fluid level problem.
Filter looked bad (smaller than the new one - probably 2/3 the size of the new one).
The old gasket was non existent.... someone had used large quantities of silicon instead, may not have helped the filter.
Checked the band adjustment while I was there.... reckon they are in the same position as before I adjusted them so I don't think anything has changed there.

Now seems to engage gears faster than it has done before.
eg. from P to D or D to R.
Took it for a short drive and all seems ok.
Will see how I get on tomorrow with a 10 mile drive to work.

Thanks to all those who responded or pm'ed

IF THERE WAS A LOT OF CRAP LYING IN THE PAN IT WILL GET SUCKED UP ON TO THE FILTER AFTER A FEW MILES AND THE TRANS WILL LOSE DRIVE, WHEN IT GOES COLD THE CRAP FALLS OF THE FILTER AND IT WILL DRIVE AGAIN TILL IT PICKS THE CRAP UP AGAIN, IF I WERE YOU DO A FEW MILES IN IT AND DROP THE PAN AGAIN SEE HOW IT LOOKS DIRTY BLACK OIL IS NOT A GOOD SIGN,

Thanks cannonball, I'll do that.
Have done 2 x 10 mile trips in it so far and it is still operating better than the previous 1900 miles that I have owned it for.
Will have done >40 miles when I have a look at the oil tonight or tomorrow.

The new fluid has a slight darkness to it that I think was only caused by the fact that there will always have been some of the old black fluid remaining in the trans and it has slightly contaminated the new fluid.
The fluid does not smell burned and the trans is still operating without fault after 150 miles.
So I'll just have to keep a close eye on it now... I am expecting that this will have shortened it's serviceable life but I may get many miles out of it with a little tlc.

Also put it though it's MOT on Monday with only one notification. Now sorted that too.
Happy that the ods and ends that I have put right over the last 6 months or so have got it to a reasonable state.... Hope not to have to do too much more than maintenance over the coming wet and cold months.

Might be a good winter project for me to rebuild a TF904 if anyone knows of one that would be good for a reco. please let me know.
Or in deed if anyone has a small block and 904 for the same purpose.
May post a wanted when I get serious about it.
