IS THERE ANOTHER CAR THAT USES THE 4L HIGH OUTPUT LUMP THAT LIVES IN THE JEEPS ?

AS I WANT TO USE A 2 WHEEL DRIVE BOX THAT WILL MARRY UP TO A JEEP LUMP,(LITTLE BRO KILLED ME JEEP WITH 38K ON IT ) COS I IS HOPING TO USE THEM IN MY 48 B1B DODGE PICUP.

LOOKED AT KEEPING THE 4X4 SET UP ,, BUT I WANT THS OL GIRL LOW!!!!!

On Cherokees and Wranglers the transfer case is separate from the transmission, driven by a chain off the tailshaft. It can be disengaged, and used in 2WD. So I would have thought you could use a standard transmission without the transfer case, as on the 2WD Cherokees sold in the States.

N.b. 4.0 Grand Cherokees had a different (permanent 4WD) transmission.

The engines were originally an AMC design but Chrysler improved them when they took over Jeep.

I strongly suspect the trans bolt pattern is the same as small block Mopar.

The AMC bellhousing pattern used to be different to anything else Mopar. As I know nothing about more modern stuff I have no idea if that is still the case with Jeep. Hope that helps :roll:

The Jeep gearbox that I had was a 904 with a transfer case as Blue said it has a different bolt pattern and shape. I used all the bits out of it and put them in a Mopar 904 as the gears were straight cut and ratios were lower. The gearbox ended up in Kevs. Brisbane Taxi

Some Jeeps come with a V8 though. Is that an AMC block or a Chrysler block?

The 4l lump is a former AMC six as already stated chrysler updated it .. cant find any thing on the net as so far !! was sugested that some euro box uses the same block... it must have been done !!!

AMC six used in the more lowly version of the ramblers pacers etc

produced by AMC in brentford until 197? in RHD format.

could be considered a UK car

belgian emergency service vehicles also used mopar slant 6s and AMC sixes as the belgian government had some kind of contract with chrysler Europe in the late 60s early 70s for drive line components and stationary engine for pumps and generators.

think there was also a spanish truck factory that used them or maybe that was slants in spanish desoto trucks....

then again i could be wrong it could have been aussie hemi 6s

anyway

Just to be clear, all of the V8s available in UK Jeeps since the mid 90's are Chrysler motors. They include the 318 and 360 available in the ZJ Grand Cherokee, the 4.7 V8 used in the WJ Grand Cherokee, and the 5.7 and 6.1 Hemi available in the current WK Grand Cherokee. AMC V8's haven't been used in Jeeps since the full size SJ Cherokee of the 70's and 80's, never available here.

Curiously, the first XJ Cherokees available in the States in the mid 80's had a 904 Torqueflite behind a 2.5 straight 4 or optional GM 2.8 V6!

From what i undestand the 2000 jeep used the high output I6 (Formaly an AMC unit) I have since found out that jeep did make a 4x2 4L auto around 1993 onwards,(hens teeth and all) . Also a jeep nut told me (if true?) that an engeneer can easy make a rear section to replace the rear 4x4 drive unit and the prop will sit in its place.. got to start on the truck soon so i will rip the jeep apart and see..

or i may just bite the bullit and rebuild the chassis and use the the whole 4x4 set up..
As if you have a lead right foot like me, the jeep becomes undriveable in 2 wheel ,,.. great fun!! :) :) and the truck has no real weight over the rear wheels,,
in 4 wheel its easy to get the jeep into a side on power slide screemin an smokin.. big grins and hold tight,,..

The transfer case sits beside the trans, not behind it, but if you have an Orvis, you will have the Selec-Trac system, with a centre differential.

So you will need the tailshaft housing and propshaft from a 2WD, at the very least. 2WD Cherokees are very common in USA, never available here.

Found an answer, just lock the jeep in 2wd and loose the f wheel drive system, told it works by somone who has doe it in a rod .. good ol rods n sods! Well we will see ,as the jeep gets chopped .as from this weekend. Truck may be drivabe within a year or two .. if this dont work got a 69 383 sittin doin nout ,lol

Just to clarify a point, the low gear set from Dave's 'box ended up in the Taxi 904 during a freshen up down Blue's. It lowered the first gear and half lowered 2nd, 3rd was normal, as you would expect. Woke the 318 up nicely! 8-) 8-) 8-)
