Bendix discs - Bolt removal. 4hrs record !

Post by morgan »

Is this a record ? 2 days off to work on car - spent 4 hours this morning on 1 bolt - and still cant shift it !

On the disc brakes there are 2 bolts that hold the caliper to the hub - the ones that you remove to change the pads. (Shows how long it has been since she had pads!). Should be a 2 minute job.... I just cant shift them at all.

Things I have tried -
- Leaving to soak for a bit in the magic stuff (WD40)
- Large spanner.
- Socket.
- Impact driver and club hammer.
- Heat.
- Spanner and hammer.
- Extension bar over socket (Have now bent socket handle  )

Also tried extensive swearing, positive thought and thought I might try prayer next...

Anyone got any magic tricks. Not expecting any really, I just wanted to vent.

I'm off to find a bigger socket handle...

heat....

if you can't apply heat

take it to a bloke with a welder
and get him to weld a bigger nut onto the head of the bolt
this provides lots of heat.

grind it off aftwards for refitment otherwise you wheels might hit it

anyway which bolts are these

the half thickness ones that hold down the flat bits that holds the caliper head onto the bracket

or the ones that mount the caliper to the stub axle...

the former are hard to find if you round em off

the latter are just big (hi tensile) bolts

Yep. You just need more heat.

Hi Morgan,

I had the same problem with one caliper bracket on my Cuda.
Guess what happened?, I sheared both the bolts where the thread meets the spindle body, after I tried heat, WD. etc., and it was to no avail.
Prepare for the worst and a visit to the engineering shop for a 1/2" UNF tap!

Best of luck Bacca.

I've seen your tool kit, you need to get some decent tools  If a good quality single hex AF socket and a 2 foot breaker bar won't shift 'em, an air or big electric impact gun is probably your best bet.....

I thought the Fraud way was speed related and auto-detachable ;)

Cheers all...

Dave and Dave - more heat. Tomorrow I am going to fry it... Will keep you posted.
Blue - I *know* you lusted after my costco-toolkit. My eclectic mix is growing, I have some lovely expensive hex-imapct-sockets now. Just dont like to get them dirty. :)
Bacca - gulp. Hope not.
Brutal - Pussy. Goddit. :thumbright:
Muzzy - Tried that. Bent me wrench. Doh :!:

So - gonna invest in a bigger bar and hit it with extreme heat. Watch this space... Thanks as ever

When I have bolts like that I soak them every day for a few days at least in WD40 (or an actual penetrant would be even better). I think when they are that stubborn you need more than a few hours for it to soak?
But either way yes a bigass breaker bar. I've had to physically stand on the end of a 6ft pole on a breaker bar and jump up and down in the past!! But yeah, you need decent tools to do it.

What size socket is it?

Morgan, not teaching grandmother etc, but watch the heat and the rubber seals/brake pipes melting through heat transfer...that's after you've boiled the fluid! ;)

Blue's right, an air gun will do the trick, I've got one at the ranch, together with proper HD sockets if you need it. :thumbright:

heat it the surrounding metal as best you can !! with out heating the bolt too much , if you know what i mean!! (harry) !! put as much pressure as possible on the breaker bar ,your full body weight !!! while smacking the head of the breaker bar with a 2 pound club hammer , all at the same time , ware gloves also on the breaker bar hand :thumbright:
