Here's the reply I got back from Don.

"I talked with my tire guy last night and showed him your email.....

He says that you'll never get real good handling on a Bias Ply tire, they will want to follow the grooves in the road.

He also said to check:
The toe setting and use a spec chart from a car that you know for sure came with a bias ply tire, some 70's came with radials.
The caster may be off causing it to wander and not track straight
Check the front strut bushings
Shocks
Steering box play
Center link etc to be sure that nothing is worn out.
If the car has a spool it won't drive very well.

His comment on the rating was it should be higher but he doubts that's your handling problem.

I found this info:

Caster
+ 1/2 - 3/4 minimum
+1 - 1.5 better
Camber
+1/2 - 3/4 minimum
1.25 Ideal
Hard core 2 - 2.5
Toe 1/16

this is straight from the guy at MT so it looks as though those front tyres won't be ideal for street use, but i guess you knew that anyway :)

I ran 145x15 Firestones on my B/B Cuda no problem, just dont Bananarama! too hard into a bend as roll under and ploughing will ensue. otherwise fine

My rears were 295 x50 x15 Cooper Cobras, from Sinton Tyres.

I prefer the back spacing equal, so that would obviously be 3 1/2 front and rear, ...but thats just my preferance.
I have some wider 8 inch American Racing wheels so I'll check the back spacing to see if its the same or greater than yours, then you have an idea of clearance probs.
Can you try a wheel to check for clearance,
Quick check tip
Or use a coat hanger around a wheel stud, straighten out to half the diameter of the wheel ie 7 1/2 inches, from the centre of the wheel mounting, then bend it at a right angle towards the wheelwell 4-7/8 inches in your case...., cut off the access and then rotate the disc or drum, and check for clearance problems do this at full lock turn to turn. thats a fairly rough guide but will work, especially when you cant get your hands on the wheels or trying big wheel combo's

Thats good, just remember that you have the Tyre to go on so make sure there a good bit of room where the( coat hanger )rotates past.
