Good day sunday :thumbright:
Stripped the crank out of the engine and found no nasties in there.
Mains and one big end thinning but the crank looks clean, so after a good clean measure and a Bananarama! will be std replacement bearings and put it all back together.
Jobs 1/2 a good un.
I just love working on these old side valves, my era I suppose, the head is a slab if pig iron with holes in and the valves come upwards how mad is that :D

To balance the cranks they simply took a grinder to the chunk of metal opposite the counterweight in the centre of the crank the end oil seals are fibre with graphite and the cam gear was originally plastic baker light type stuff.
luckily they make an after market aluminium one

Had to regrind the crank, decided to have hard inserts fitted to the exhaust valve seats while it was on the bench and a re bore with new pistons.
The crank is installed crikey it is heavier than a big block mope one.
Getting the valve assemblies in was a bugger had to improvise a spring compressor from a body clamp by cutting a slot in the bottom and removing the plastic foot.
It has self rotating valves so similar to the normal overhead valve with retainer and collettes.
But as there was not slow release on my home made clamp I just had to line it all up release the clamp with a bang and it either went in or flicked the Collettes all over the place.
All in now and sorted.
Pistons and rods next. :thumbright:
