Rear end oil leak advice

Post by vipergts »

Moved the Charger out of its nice warm garage and noticed gear oil had seeped down the inside of the rear tyre onto the floor.

Now I suspected that something was going on back there cos there has been a lot of creaking.

Oil is obviously leaking out of the axle tube.

Question is (from a techno div) what is going on????

Could the bearing be broken up or is there a seal in there that is shot or could it all just be lose. Or all three?

Many Thanks

strip it out and see whats going on its easy to get to, to pull the half shaft out

did you have any work done in this area when you had the car restored, in all honesty after the work you done on the e type this will be easy they are nothing like asw hard to work on as the jag,

You're not wrong there....the rear end on the Jags are very complex.

I'm sure it's not too difficult but I'm unfamiliar with it and wondered whether there might be a common cause.

Diff wasn't stripped....just painted. All skirt and no knickers.

Had a similar issue with a 60 VW which had a seal and bearing. Spose they must all be similar set up.

Incidentally Dunc.......did you ever find a spare jack/brace and spare wheel fixing kit etc for my 68. We spoke a while ago and you thought you might have something???

pull the drum off and you will see five nuts 9.1/6 ths spanner size remove them and you will be able to pull the half shaft out jiggle it to get it to come past the shoes and handbrake cross barr you may have to wag the back plate a little but it will come out. there are gaskets between the back plate and the axle hsg they are there purely to stop any minor grease/oil etc not to stop the axle leaking there is a seal in the housing that is prob buggered, thats if it has original; taper bearings and not had the later/drag type green bearings fitted,

and yes i will have the jack parts can you post a piccy of required parts or maybe someone that reads this

Sounds like the same set up as the VW then.

Thanks Dunc......appreciate the info.

JAck wise I'm not sure what was std as I've never seen one but hopefully someone will come to the rescue.

Also need the spare wheel fitting plate and bolt if you have one.

Thanks again

Thanks Guys

Anton/Dunc...That's the jack.....Anyone got pic of the Spare wheel mounting plate...triangular I believe???

Jon.....Do you remember the creaking and cracking going on at the rear Off-side?? well thats the side that is leaking so I'm thinking there might be a bit more going on.

the plate that the jack sits in is the one that goes on top of the spare wheel and then the bolt goes through that.
