In the spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to?

Post by Anonymous »

In the spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of what to do with a Super bee with an engine in bits.
The Heads have been refurbished over the xmas period with new bronze guides and a re cut to the valves with a triple angle seat job and are ready to go.
The only new parts required are a set of pistons, plus the bearings gaskets and oils ext to get the engine up and running.
As the other projects are slowing getting sorted I have started to plan ahead and set about getting the parts organised.
How ever as the block basically overdosed on oil I wanted to be sure the block was sound with no minute cracks or excessive wear so the cost of the rebuild was not wasted.
After a few let downs on who said they can do this work but could not, I found a small outfit in Bagshot who said they could help.
So set off today with the block in the Jeep and trundled down to there workshop.
I must say I was very impressed with the set up they have just about every machine for engine refurbishment in there including line boring, balancing and a flow test bench.
There were about every block crank and engine ever built at different stages of refurbishment including porche, jaguar and classic F1 engines.
These are the guys that own and run the A35 that Martin Brundel races at the Good wood revival.
Paul the owner was proud to show me around and explained how they proposed to check my block.
First a hot and cold submerged pressure test of all the bores and oil ways, if that checks out then it is an acid clean, chemical wash and re-hone to the bores.
Will keep you posted ans see if I can get a few pictures when I pick the block up. :thumbright:

Well it is good news week,
Firstly Paul from CMES rang me to say that my engine had passed the hot and cold pressure tests and was crack free, the cost if you are looking to do this job was £80 which I thought was reasonable, now its a clean, hone and measure the bores, I can then order a new set of pistons, as they are "custom" the actual bore is not a problem as I can order any diameter I like.
the original pistons were Venola but they do not recommend them for over 600 Hp so I am looking at Wiesco or Ross as replacements.
The second good thing the 6 pot Ford is machine work is finished which included a crank grind, valve job and rebore to +40 so it is ready to rebuild with a new set of bearings pistons and Gaskets :thumbright:
