exhaust/oil filter clash (duster/Dart)

Post by Anonymous »

My Dart sport has a remote oil filter due to the exhaust down pipe running too close to the filter point. Seemed a good idea until i removed it and found it had ben burning on the exhaust anyway.
Whatever way i fit it it hits the exhaust.
Luckily a 4" filter fitted on the block clears the exhaust by about, well nothing you could measure!
I want to fit the original 340 cast manifolds but it looks as if the rear exit down pipe will also hit the filter!!! :x
Can anyone provide advice?? (i want to run the 360 thru decent mainifolds not the horrendous 318s currently bolted on)

There were two set ups on small blocks, the filter could either screw straight to the block or on some models there was a 90 deg filter adapter, maybe you need one of those?

Alex, i did wonder about that. I'll need to measure up. I've got the filter and exhaust on but, i would need to drop the downpipe to remove the filter which doesnt seem right to me!

you can get a 90 degree adaptor to run the filter along the side of the block , i had one ( might still have it ) this might cure the problem

RHD small blocks had steel pipes taken off to a remote oil filter bracket.

James, thats what i've got but the oil feed lines cannot clear the exhaust sufficiently.
By using a 4" filter (short one ,Guy) it just about fits.
James any chance of trying your right/angle jobby to see if it'lll provide sufficient clearence. Really trying to get this motor upand running anytime soon!
thanks

Sounds like a strange 'un, the steel pipes usually allow for the smallest of clearances. I got a steering box and headers close by and they go round fine (bit naughty to fit though). Do you have an Aussie 360 then? Best way to tell is a number stamped on the flat section on the LH rear of the block next to where the bellhousing bolts up. The number will start with the prefix 'A421'.

James, my remote set up uses thick (1" approx) hoses and basicaly you cant get them to bend enough to clear the exhaust. I suspect that a right angle jobby would provide the required clearence especially as I want to fit original 340 hi-po manifolds that I have.
