Disc Brake Kit

Post by nigel »

Hi

Now my Mrs wants to drive my pride and joy  , the project for this winter will be to fit a power disc brake kit to my 68 Charger which currently runs on manual drums. Any advice on what is the best kit to buy on a sensible budget and replacement parts e.g. brake pads are freely available?

Do her knee caps. Thatt way she cant drive and you save money on brake upgrades (and accident repairs no doubt :-D )

Seriously though, SSBC seem to be well recommended.

Thanks Clive

Just checked out SSBC, all their products seemed to need 17 inch wheels and above for clearance (unless I was looking in the wrong place). I want to keep my 15 inch Torq Thrusts. I was hoping to find a tried and tested full kit which included a booster etc, everything on the SSBC website appeared to be sold as separates.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I've also been looking on e-bay and found this

Has anyone got any views or tried this?

Hi Nigel,

Always a tricky one doing this conversion.
Don't trust Chevy guys selling Mopar Stuff LOL!
Best bet is a 70on E-body or 71on B-body set-up.
The other alternative is to use Landcruiser discs on the drum brake spindles.
SSBC is not good at all, mixed reports on their crossover Mustang parts too!

The biggest problem is the brake balance set-up, to stop the rear drums locking up.

Best of luck Bacca.

I personally don't rate SSBC, the discs and pad area are not big enough. Just because the bolt on does not mean they stop well.

This is a classic case of you get what you pay for....

Don't bother with the Viper conversion kit - the 72-76 "A" Body Drum spindles required for the conversion are made from Unobtainium....

Thanks for all the advice and help.

I've emailed Matt Classics Bowties to ask if they are prepared to ship parts to the UK - not received a reply from them yet. Apparently all their braking components are based on 70's mopar gear.
