prop shaft UJ's

Post by Valcuda »

I took the Barracuda for its MOT yesterday (it passed) and the tester observed (advisory item) that there was slight wear in the front prop shaft UJ. His attention was drawn by the rustiness around it, he said.

There's no noise or anything so I expect it'll carry on OK for a few months more. But is this replacement a specialised garage project or a DIY one? The Plymouth manual implies that it IS specialised but maybe I'm reading it wrongly.

The tester wasn't touting for business or anything like that but he suggested that if I'm replacing the front UJ, I may as well do the rear one as well. He said that BMG in Leatherhead could send it away to somebody in Essex to get it done, if they have the parts.

Are "our" UJ's likely to be stocked by firms in this country?

belive the UJs to be the same as small US ones
i.e the kind you find behind a slant or 273 that has a 904 behind it

you may find these guys have something

http://www.propshaft-services.co.uk/contact_us.asp

they are in feltham

however i think its a case of
undo the back end
lower it
oull out the front
clamp a plastic bag round the housing with tight rubber bands or a cable tie cos the oil will come out

then take it to bits
pulling out the retainer circlips
pulling out the caps and checking the roller bearings
check its in tollerance and the cross isn't scored
grease it up

service manual is here
