The speedometer on the Satellite (318Ci and 904 transmission) has stopped working so I thought I would replace the cable, which seems to be the problem, and fit a new adaptor seal, new pinion (with the correct number of teeth for the tyre size) and pinion seal.
Here's the question. When I remove the adaptor the transmission oil pours out in large quantities. It doesn't say anything about this or draining the transmission before doing this procedure in the Plymouth Service Manual (page 21-32). Is this supposed to happen or is there a bigger problem inside?
Any help or suggestions much appreciated.

The Tailshaft hangs down, so Oil will flow out - try jacking the rear of the car up to combat this a bit. Also ensure that the gear meshes correctly - it is on an eccentric so it can cope with different gear ratios and sizes.
I still have the burns on my hand to testify that my Charger worked ok after setting it up!
