Manual Steering Box

Post by Scooby »

Have discovered a slight leak from mine ( around the spindle shaft) as it goes into the top of the box. Is there a rebuild kit for these ie new seals, gaskets, bushes that anyone knows of.
Thanks.
Richard.

yes you can

MP made some

just need to shop arround as the price vary wildy

you may find you can get stuf locally but that involves taking it off taking it to bits and presenting your locl bearing place with a part to match

i gave up and used grease in mine

no probs since

slight oozing at the pitman arm end but not dripping

aussie manual box is the same in all aspects apart from the case/mounting as a US pre 68 box and a post 68 police box

i.e just like yours apart from it has needle rollers for the bottom sector shaft bearing rather than a bush..

they specify SAE90 or smooth (i.e no "Old Skool" short fibre strand grease) wheel bearing grease.

having said that

if its coming out at the top? i.e steering column end thats a bit odd

how full is ya box?

mine has been full of grease for 8 years and no worse than it was for ware

aussie manual states oil or grease

US manual for any year i belive says oil

think you'd be fine for a while

everything in there is a big lump of metal and nice hard ball bearings

i was lucky my grease gun was really quite a tight fit
so no issues

otherwise you need to drill a bolt that fits into the filler hole and fit a nipple

either way the little bolt that is there currently needs to go back after filling as anything longer interferes with the ballnut
