Leaf Springs Again

Post by Anonymous »

Hi there, sorry for the reptitive question, although I've looked over the other posts on the subject...

Quite simple, can anyone recommend where in the UK I can pick up a fresh set of Leaf Springs for 1970 Charger?

...can anyone recomend a type of specification of Leaf Spring / Performance Leaf Spring etc. that is better for cornering, road use and circuit use over drag racing?

Just testing the water here before I try and smuggle some back in a SKi bag from Canada!!! :D

Don't.

Either get your originals re-tempered or buy from ESPO.com. Getting them from any other source is risky as there is a LOT of rubbish out there. Even Year One supplied sub standard springs to someone on my message board.
Everyone who has ever spoken to the nice lady at ESPO knows they REALLY know what they are talking about. They also happen to be CHEAP!

Do not buy Mopar performance XHD leaf springs, I have fitted 2 sets for customers and they were not much better than the sagging originals. Be wary of Mopar performance parts in general, a lot of thier parts are of poor quality, ask here first! I would agree with Dave, ESPO have a good reputation.

Don has warned me away from MP springs saying they are not made in the USA and the quality is rubbsh.

He also tells me that a lot of the good spring manufactureres in the states no longer bother as they can't compete on price.

You'd find someone here to either retemper as Dave says or make new, if you can find someone to make new be sure to ask all the questions first before parting with the hard earnt

Oh , and steer clear of the MP spring shackles. They're rubbish.

I was fitting a set & doing the 11/16 AF nut up by hand with a small ring spanner . I sheared it off without really trying.

So I got my torque wrench out , set it correctly , & sheared off the other three for good measure.

And these things are holding your back axle up.

i'll agree with the mopar performance springs, leave well alone,

not to mention, when i ordered a customer a set about 6 years ago, they took my money no problem, then when i enquired a few weeks later i was told they were on back order  , ultimately i ended up waiting 4 months for the "order of 100 pairs" to be made up by mopar, and then the idiots sent it by boat instead of plane, as paid for, and the sticker on the springs was made in china

luckily my customer understood it wasnt my fault and still had the springs (i dont know the result regards quality), but mopar, at that point, lost a good customer... me ! i used to buy around ?200-600 a month for a year or two, soon packed that in !

that was just after the time i paid for 2 tins of orange engine spray paint to be added to an order coming by boat, 2 weeks later they arrived seperately on the doorstep, sent some fancy ups way, because only ups would take them on planes, the tins.....?16 each, the shipping..... ?38 !

if i recall, i was using mancini for the springs, not sure where the tins came from now,

grrrrr

carry on folks !

You beat me there Will. Sperry were very good I don't know now as they don't do much work in-house now. They certainly seem to have the dimensions and rates for any spring they're given. Brost road forge is another one ,I've lost their details though.
