Harsh 2nd to 3rd change

Got a reverse pattern 727,1st to 2nd smooth,2nd to 3rd is harsh,(bang) except when i'm gunnin it,been told it's a sticky valve and to take it out and clean it up with 1000 grit and the change will be smoother,is this right?
If so, what do i have to do to get to the valve and what am i looking for.
Never had a reverse pattern before so don't know if it should be like this or not,farting into the wind comes to mind
Only trans experience i have is dropping the pan and changing a valve body on a C4.

Is it new , old ?
Make ?
Reverse or forward should nt make a difference..my Cheeta VB changes are hard and fast at any speed in all gears

The valve body can be accessed via the trans sump...drain the sump if it has a plug..if not its gonna get messy.
Then with the sump off, the Valvebody is visable.
Just note what goes where as you take it out...plenty of screws etc
Im Sure Blue will be along soon, for better advice on repairing it or throwing it away for a new one

Hy Bryan,

Been researching this problem and have got a few fixes for you!
Its called 'overlap binding' between 2nd and 3rd.

Two ways to fix, one easy one hard Lol.

Remove the manual-valvebody from under the car and check there is a passage-way restrictor in the first hole from the pump into the valve-body.
This should always be fitted with a manual V/B.
The second fix is more work and it requires removal of the front drum and a full set of clutch release springs fitted behind the drum piston!

Hey Bacca,

Think i've found an easier way, change into third anytime after 4 grand on the revs.
I've never had anything like this before,so it was just to gauge opinions.
More race set up than for street.Dunc built the box for me.
