F0rd 9"- how much fluid?

Post by db »

Mine has a Detroit locker, it's an S&W case so doesn't have the 'fill til it runs back out' filler hole.
I bought 3 litres of goop ages ago on someone's advice on here but just want to check thats right?

I was told & have read between 2.5 - 3 Quarts for a 9", never seen it quoted in Litres.

If running a Posi/ Detroit Locker, it is advisable you should run a Posi lube or similar. ( Approx 4 Pints + 1 Pint Posi Lube)

FYI
3 Litres = 5.28 Pints
4 Pints = 2.27 Litres
1 Pint = 0.57 Litres
1 Quart= 2 Pints = 1.14 Litres

My conversion tables says 1 Quart = 0.946 Litres.

It does not help that US gallons and pints are a different size to ours.

1 Quart = 2 US Pints but only 1.66 UK Pints.

Any idea who stocks posi lube?
Can't find it listed at any of the usual suspects (Real Steel, Summit, Jegs, Rally Design, Randys ring n pinion, Richmond gear) :?

Do i need an additive for a Detroit locker? Everything i'm reading says not because there's no clutch. Am i missing something?

"LOCKER is exactly that - meaning that in use the two axles can become locked- the infamous Detroit Locker for instance is a device that used no side gears (no spider gears) and no clutches (cone or otherwise) when sufficient power is applied the axles become LOCKED together. To allow a turn they RATCHET - often this ratchet action makes noise - I'm told this "noise" is even found offensive by some (never met "them" but I've heard that rumor all my life - ha ha) but back to business - these lockers have certain characteristics - understeer being one of them. New more modern designs address some of these pecularities. Since these rear axles use no clutches they require no "special" additives - just regular gear oil."

I'm not fussed about noise if thats the only benefit!

Hi Paul

I used about 4 quarts in mine with no additive ( both with a detroit and with a spool )

Mine was oem Ford casing, might be worth checking to see if the SW one is physically larger ?
