Paint mixing and storage

Post by Steve »

Hi all,

heres one for all you body and paint pros....

Recently had some paint done on my Polara and the guy who painted it gave me what was left of the paint and a small tin of hardener so I can make up some touch up paint if I need it. There isnt much there and he says I need to mix it 2 parts paint/ 1 part hardener or it will take ages to go off.....my question is... if I get an airtight jar, would it be ok to mix say, a jar full, and keep it sealed to use when i want to?? will it stay useable or will it 'set'?

Thanks and cheers, Steve

Once the hardener has been added it will go off even in a sealed jar. I don't think it air dries it's a chemical reaction like a two pack epoxy.

No it will set, you can slow down the process by keeping it cool but once the chemical reaction is made between the 2 if will start to go off, if you only need to mix a small amount, use some kitchen scales to weigh it out 2-1 eg 20 gram paint 10 gram hardner.
