one for the anoraks....I mean experts

Post by Steve »

Only kidding...... heres a teaser for all you Mopar pros.........

My 68 Polara sedan has a small Pentastar badge on the passenger wing just under the POLARA name plate. It is about the size of a 20p coin and all the finish is rubbed off so its all black. Couple of questions....

1. What colour should this badge be? Have looked at some old brochures but not clear from the old photos. Jims autoparts in the US list them as being black background with gold raised sections and are listed as standard for most 68-73 mopar A, B, and C bodies. Want to be sure before I do any work on it

2. Thought I was missing one as there isnt one on the drivers side wing but again, Jims Auto parts only lists a passenger side badge, all of the original artwork I have has one on pass side but not drivers side, and there are no mounting holes on the drivers wing for one.. Can anyone confirm if this research is accurate please.... should my car have one on drivers side or not??

Cheers and all the best , Steve

They were only fitted on the passenger side. I wouldn't buy anything from Jims Autoparts, the badges are available else where and you won't get ripped off.

Thanks for really quick response gents. Im going to restore the one thats fitted. Am i correct in assuming the raised parts are gold and the low spots and edges are black? What would be the best method to get the original colour/ finish. I would imagine spraying would be the best option.

Sounds like Jims auto parts has a bad reputation!! Ive used dantes and they are great!

Jims gets a bad rep mainly because the advertised price is often not the price you actually get charged.

Thanks, thats well worth knowing! Ive done a bit of research based on what you guys have told me and Mopar Restoration do an exact repro emblem with the correct foil goil finish. Think will get one of those rather than trying to bodge a job on the one I have. Can anyone recommend a Mopar Restoration parts supplier that offer a good service? Im on to Dantes and Classic industries at mo..... Cheers

Actually Summit Racing have just started stocking restoration parts too. Mainly sheet metal, bumpers and the like.

PG Classics ship stuff from China. They tend to reproduce the parts no-one else makes. The other suppliers often stock their stuff too but at higher cost.

and Mancini's

http://chucker54.stores.yahoo.net/chfepe.html

$10.95

If that's all youre ordering tho, it might be worth asking whoever you get it from to ship it in a jiffy bag.
Some companies like Year One & Summit have a habit (or policy?) of putting the smallest parts in an over-sized box which you end up paying throught the nose for in shipping

Thanks everyone, Dantes have come good again for me....£11 inc postage, cant really grumble at that...and its an authentic Mopar restoration emblem with the correct foil finish.

Seems like there are a few really good companies in US, cant fault the comms from Dantes, Classic Industries and Year One, just postage that varies a bit. Dantes initially quoted $20 to post and when I said that would take me over the customs threshold etc they knocked it down to $7 (takes a bit longer but no probs). Would definately recommend them!

Thanks again everyone

Best wishes, Steve

PS really interesting why they put just one emblem on, would think some designer would say for sake of 10c just put one on other side aswell. Im too OCD to be a car designer!!

Thats really kind of you to offer but I have ordered one from Dantes and paid for it already via paypal. Really appreciate your help with this though. I remember filling my toolbox at my local scrapyard with little bits for my MG 1100 when I first started driving.....good days!

Cheers Steve
