Discs calipers and small bolt pattern

Post by VGVIP »

Out of interest....

When did the US a-body mopars stop using the smaller 4" PCD?

Are all the discs solid as opposed to vented?

Are the 4 piston calipers of the early 70s any good?

Anyone know the wheel bearing used?

Thanks

I believe they were phased out during 73. (my 72 is sbp all around).

most 73 /6's have sbp. Most V8's were BBP, but i believe there have been cases of 318's still having sbp, but rare.

74 on were all BBP i believe.

All above is from info i've read on For A Bodies Only.

Not sure on the other q's.... :thumbright:

Steve

Have you got drums or discs at mo ? ( I`m assuming drums ? )

I fitted Wilwoods which come with dual pattern threading for SBP + BBP ... ( I ended up with BBP rears and SBP fronts on the Valiant )

Very nice kit ... I originally had early small bolt pattern Mopar discs and had to machine spindles to suit Wilwood bearings ... I CANNOT BE SURE IF THIS WAS BECAUSE I HAD THE KIT AND MADE SPINDLES FIT KIT OR COS I WAS GOING DISC TO DISC ??? ... you may be able to do it the easy way and buy the kit to suit your spindles ?

Everything is in the kit and as a bonus you can remeber which pads to fit a year later ;)

Hi Jon.

The VG is disc.
They were the last year (1970) of the aussie sbp but the first year of the vented disc.

Hope to be getting replacement discs from oz, via Roger otherwise from someone like Sunbury brakes in Melbourne.

Was just wondering if the US cars used the same or if it was another oz specific.
My guess is that the earlier (VE & VF etc.) solid sbp discs would have been same as late 60's Dart. But then for the VG maybe the aussie design changed. From the US.

VG was a unique set-up

first year if the vented disc
last year of the smaller disc
last year of the 5 on 4 inch PCD

VF were solid disks
VH were bigger vented disks

VFVG VH used same caliper i think

also used on 65 66 mustang with different bracket

VJ calipers are cast iron girlock sliders...the best Aussie mopar set up

CL CM got PBR aluminum calipers with different rotor offset and a tendancy to warp the caliper

hard to buy a Mopar in oz with front drums after VE 1968
you had to specify no carpet or heater no seats no wheels no doors poverty spec hemi 215 motor

to achieve it

but they perisisted with the option for quite a while for fleet orders, you could also order a battery with no Acid???

Thanks all.
I was just weighing up my options and was considering if a conversion from my particular OZ to a US setup was going to be a valid consideration.
Have decided to stick with my Aussie setup and rebuild it all.

With internet etc these days it makes sense to keep original and get the bits from Oz.

I needed brake seals in a hurry for the Holden Commodore(daily driver).
1 phone call to cousin in Adelaide, purchased & posted Friday, arrived following Wednesday.
I know it is lighter weight, but things don't take long nowadays.
