A legend as you say Jerry -saw the white Daytona for sale on ebay about 2 years ago almost as it was in the seventies and had been left in someones lot for years. Someone tell me if i'm wrong but the guy was to street racing what Ali was to boxing. Probably all been said before but he warrants his name carved into the tarmac on the side of LA the brotherhood hung out.
if you think speed kills don't get on a plane
BIG Willie
Who can forget the opening sequence to Two Lane Blacktop the Street Races and Big Willie are clearly in the footage.
Back in the day around 1976 we tried something similar at the Chelsea Cruise, a bit of Street Racing. We raced down Trinity Road on cruise nights and called it TIR Trinity International Raceway in honour of the LA Street Racers, still have the articles aqbout Big Willie and his wife in the Hot Rod mags of the day. This guy was the vioce of the "little" guy in the hobby and a nod towards Martin Luther King with evereything that man stood for. Immigration, Colour and folk who lived in oppresseed lands should live together in harmony,....Basically what the US stands for to-day.
BIG WILLIE RIP.......you were the man.........live on 69 Daytona's.

Never saw so many people waiting at the bus stop, also never saw so many people running for a bus

Lot of unhappy folks, including the Fire brigade
"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."
I was there that night as well...not in a car as too young to drive
but vividly remember the scale of the operation, talk about waste of taxpayers money..

There were 3 of us that went that night, Graham Barrs of "Neon Star" '69 Mustang fame at the time, and a mate with a Tunnel Rammed '74 Camaro, he got a bit worried about his CB radio system in his car and tore it out to hide it....unfortunately for him, his car caught on fire, we got it put out though!!!!
A huge waste of money really as said.....but a night that sticks in the memory.

Yes I was there too, was stuck there for over 4 hours whilst they went over dozens and dozens of cars, mine included, with a fine tooth comb. Many guys got seriously nicked as there was some highly illegal stuff there that night. I got away with a producer though they were very sceptical that the 1600 with twin 40's I had in my Anglia was really a 997 as it said on my insurance document's...
I don't know if any of you remember the guy in the mk1 Cortina with a 289 and a 4 speed doing a runner with the cops in hot pursuit, that was all very Two Lane Blacktop.

I think that was Bob the ted in the 289 Cortina,a body and paint guy from Camberwell he painted Alan Goulds superbird way back.Think the old bill got him that night, put the fan through the rad if i remember right.Trinity rd was great back then, remember not being able to stop my 68 coronet at the end many times and nearly ploughing strait through the roundabout!how did we get away with it?
