CCK Historic's 66 Barracuda Richard Petty circuit racer

Post by Anonymous »

Hello,

Everybody knows about Petty's drag car but very little is known about the man's short stint in the SCCA Trans-Am series in 1966. The Trans-Am series started in 1966 as an American take on the European touring car series and was open to FIA group 2 homologated cars. In it's debut year the organisers dragged a number of big name NASCAR drivers over to Trans-Am to entice spectators over to circuit racing. Most of these drivers competed in few races and returned to NASCAR. One of these big names was Richard Petty. He drove for the factory back Team Starfish with Scott Harvey, Charlie Rainville and Bruce Jennings. As far as I can tell Petty only competed in one race. He paired up with Charlie Rainville for the two driver race with the second team car being driven by Scott Harvey and Bruce Jennings. The thing that I find very interesting about this is that Petty's car was differentiated from Harvey's car by the front panel being bright orange/red. This was 1966 and pre-dates any STP involvement and is the earliest I have ever seen Petty using the blue and orange livery on his car. Perhaps it was just a coincidence.

This is the car we wish to recreate. I will be keeping my website up to date with the build and will try and get some info and pictures up here as we go. Cheers,

Daniel
