Leaf springs

I have now had my leafs zinc plated.

The springs are not standed as my car arse was in the air but i like the look.

There where no Zinc or plastic interliners when removed from car.

To try and save a few $$$ i dont want to buy the kits. i want to use some stainless clips i have and rubber protectors. (clips tested but using as spring compress on a sierra and they are Bananarama! strong)

Q. What do interliners do and do i need them ??
Q. What material should i use as interlines how thick and where should i put them

I think the interliners reduce spring bind and also prevent squeaks and rust as the steel would rub together and rust in stort order.

If you are going to keep the car/springs then would it not be better to do the correct job once? They are a pain to drag on and off the car and in principle you are supposed to change the "U" bolts each time........

The interliners allow the ends of the spring to slide when flexing , thay used plastic ( or rather nylon ) as it is self lubricating , if the ends rusted they can make for a very harsh ride and make horrid squeeky sounds , or you can do like my Dad used to do and make some leather gaiters for them and spray oil on them , ( get some old lieder hosen )

Old Rolls Royce's had stiched leather gaiters over the springs, very swish.

Or do what Ade Worman and I discussed on another thread and wrap it in this gooey stuff that Ade sells for cables (I think)...not very swish

It was denso tape im making notes

As you said not very swish that one.

So if i take nylon thin sheet and make interliners that are the same size as the leafs (runing the whole length of every leaf ) would this work ???

Yes i should just but the kits but its 240 USD then ship and tax and uk then germany ............

Ship them to the UK address and pick them up at the Nats.

At the risk of sounding like I am having a pop, I am sometimes intrigued by your purchases and priorities. You go to some extrodinary lenghts on some stuff, and then want to short cut on some essential items......just a personal view. At the end of the day it's not my car or budget so go with what you want.
I am sure you will crack it

Pete i need your veiw or i would not asked.

I understand where you coming from just it seams crazy money for some sheets of plastic and some metal clips.

Everything i have gone over the top on was only becuse it was a case of time and not cash

So after abit of google i found that the kits with the zinc interliners are not zinc. Its just steel that has been zinc plated that will wear and rust in time.

The best way seams to be teflon interlines as a dry lube

What ever you install as a interliner it will wear over time.

I will try with teflon and see how we go.

Good bit of investigation - worth knowing about the Zinc.
Teflon seems a very good option if the wear properties are OK.

My original interliners are solid zinc. I'm going to get some .8mm zinc sheet off ebay and make my own.

When my leaf springs were rebuilt and retempered they used thick steel straps hammered around the springs and a steel rivet holds them in place so they don't move.

I have also look at this but teflon had much better wear and dry lube property then zinc. Good to know

We use Denso on BT radio towers. It'll keep the weather out of cables for 20 years if the birds don't pinch it!
