Fitting an aerial?

Hi all

One job still to do on the Sport Satellite is to fill the hole in the wing... sorry, fender with the aerial base we have.

Ash told us at the Nats that to get access to the underside of the hole, all that's needed is to remove the access panel from within the wheel arch. Sounds obvious but tbh, we hadnt even noticed there was an access panel there!

Well, we've undone a few screws but the panel still isnt budging.

Can anyone tell us, if it has been fitted properly, should it just come away after undoing these screws?

Or, looking at the pics below, could it be that it wasnt fitted correctly so is being retained by some other panels/screws under there?


Oh and one other thing for when we do get under there - the factory manual illustration shows a 'spreader plate' that fits up below the hole, that the aerial retaining nut screws up against (rather than digging into the underside of the wing, I guess) - has anyone ever seen one of these?

We've asked Year One about them and they say they arent being repro'd, so we'll prob make our own, but it would be interesting to see an original, or know if anyone's car still has one fitted....

Stop being a fanny. Take that bloody wheel off and get yourself under there and pull the panel off. You might have missed a screw or two. You will tell as you pull it away where it might still be attached.

Check those three/four round headed things right at the top are not pins or clips of some kind. Also make sure any screws are not hidden by road dirt.

Is that very top bit part of the panel or holding it in place?

Mine where held in with underseal.

like a bead of slicone then screw in.

as said get under there a pull the thing off.

i can take pictures of mine tonight if you want.

I had the panel off the Coronet before i sold it, Dave's right, it may still have a bolt in it somewhere but should just pull or slide off, behind those caps are a spring clip if i remember right.

You're all right of course, we need to get the wheel off to do the job properly, but were trying initially just to see if it was gonna be as easy as suggested.
Those round-looking-pin-type-things are prob what's holding it in now (apart from any underseal ) but it's useful to know those pins/caps have spring clips also. Just didnt want to pull on them too much without knowing how they were held in...

There’s 6 screws in total, 5 attach the access panel to the inner fender, 1 attaches it to the bracket on the fender behind the front wheel, the 1 you might have missed is right up at the top, there’s a hole in the rubber gasket (I can see it in your 2nd pic), there’s a screw thro that hole

Those round looking pin things if I remember right just attach the rubber gasket to the access panel, the access panel and the rubber gasket should all come out together

it looks like the spreader plate is missing from my car

infact when i got it there was no aerial, just a hole

there is a small angled bracket/tab just to the left of the aerial in the pic below, is that something to do with the spreader plate attachment??
