Boot floor - 69 Charger

Post by MikeB »

Hi Guys

Ive just installed a new boot floor into my 69 Charger but my mechanic thinks that it should be welded to the frame or rear cross member of the car to help with flexing, is this correct? I hope Ive worded this right!

my trunk floor was replaced in 2006, I haven’t got any pics of how the original was attached as the buggers had the old one out before I could reach for the camera :D, but as you can see here they HAVE attached the new floor to the rear frame presume where those dots are on the new metal ... do they call that spot welding or poodle welding or something :dontknow:

The trunk floor should be spot welded to the frame rails and spring hanger brackets (as shown in those pics) . It's a part of the car's structure. The repair in the pics is nicely done.

the join below the parcel shelf in the pics looks well done. It's possible to butt weld this for an invisible join underneath, but a lap weld is much easier in this location. It's not much more work though to use the whole repair panel and join at the factory weld behind the rear seat.

The trunk floor join with/near the rear crossmember is (IIRC)actually triple- skinned and very tricky to repair nicely. But must be welded to replicate factory strength.

Can't see exactly in the pics , but looks like the joins with the side extensions might be tacked from the top rather than spotted through the flanges from underneath the car . The flanges should be welded as this gives more rigidity to the finished floor.

:

Drill a hole in the floor but not the rail then fill with weld from the top.

I would call it a plug weld.

Nice floor :thumbright:
