Dave, I have the same prob now I dont take sandwiches... Now I take a chicken salad most days or do a big pot of beef caserole and bang it in a food flask. Even easier if you have a microwave at work!

When ive had my brekkie I just leave the griddle on, chuck a chicken breast on it while im eating my bacon and eggs then chuck some dark leaf salad, cherry tomatoes, feta or similar, olives, sometimes pickled chillies, etc into a tub and when the chicken is done, cut it up and chuck it in. Dress it with Paul Newmans own vinegarette dressing (low carb) when you get to work. Do loads of it and you wont eat junk.... If you are still hungry, have a can of mackerral in brine to beef it up a bit or take a couple of cold boiled eggs ( very filling).

Noodles are hi carb, so try beansprouts which I think are lower in carbs with a bit chicken in soy sauce maybe. Have chilli or spag bol but have more of it to fill you up and no rice or spaghetti....

Cheers Steve :thumbright:

I struggle because of shift work and driving trains isnt very pysical and makes taking lunch hard as I have nowhere to keep it fresh especially when im on lates. Most of what I can get is Bananarama! fast foods at the stations where I have my break. I usually have to take a walk to the nearest supermarket to buy a chicken salad (if I have time)

Im the same Carl, I drive all day, do shifts and eat on the road.... Get sick of eating cold food day in and day out so the caserole or soup in a flask is good and if im stuck, chicken kebab meat and salad always avail 24/7 on the road in Brum :thumbright:

the fact that you are aware of what you are eating makes a huge difference

I'm thinking we all agree...

i like being able to sit at my desk and not feel the rolls of fat on my stomach fighting with my belt...its good...

just got to get rid of, or convert my b-cups into something presentable and i'll be happy to hit the beach.
that will take a bit more exercise of the upper body than typeing allows, but for once is seems achievable

kids are older bed time and stories takes less time meaning evenings start at 8 pm now not 9, if i could just get into the house before 7 pm i'd
be really happy

I have found that some carbs is OK for me. Like the noodles. But I really notice a difference when I eat or don't eat bread for some reason. Anything made with yeast (including beer) seems to go straight to my belly. But other carbs and alcohol don't.

I don't understand the reson for that. Maybe it is just me.

Oh the other change I made was to only ever have porrage for breakfast. Fills me up for hours and, I am told, lowers cholestrol.

My body mass index and cholestrol are actually OK. Just. I just want a buffer zone for it rather than being on the edge.

depends on the type of carbs and what you eat with them

body takes energy from easiest means

fats are easy
carbs are harder
long string carbs like starches are even harder.
protien supplies the cell building blocks and chemicals to aid the other processes.

if you eat a high fat diet you get a larger proportion of each days energy from the fat. but note animal fats do not turn directly into human fat.

however the carbs you eat are still broken down into sugars (the ideal supply of energy for you) which you should not be weeing out (sign of diabetes ) they have to be converted if not used

the sugars are what you should be getting your energy from but
excess sugars that are not used are turned into fat, a storage mechanism for times when food is in short supply

in an ideal world you'd get much of your energy from long string starchy carbs which take a long time to break down into sugar to keep you going for a long time, no big sugar peaks and troughs during the day to swing bodys from use it mode into store as fat mode and back again

white bread has carbs and natural sugars in it but they are easy quick release energy. gret to get you going in the morning
whole meal bread has more long string carbs great to keep you going
in fact anything that is closer to its natural state will have
fruit sugars short string carbs
but still better than refined sugars.

carbs are broken down by enzymes.
production of the enzymes are dicated by how much carbs you need to break down. Enzyme can be considered a catalyst for a chemical reaction, the more there is of the enzyme the more exposure of the carb rich food to the catalyst, and the faster the reaction.
If you live on a fatty diet production and levels of enzymes designed to break down the carbs reduce

hence when moving to a better diet you often feel tierd worn out and hungry until your body gets itself back on the right lines in order to work as intended on starchy carbs and fruit sugars rather than sitting on its ass letting the fat you consume power you i.e uses the proper stuff to power you each day.

if you don't consume enough energy your body uses some energy to convert your body fat back into chemicals that can be used to power you, not quite the orginal sugars but similar in their action on cells

hence putting in less than you need results in reasonably rapid weight loss.

alcohol is odd.

yes beer is full of carbs (vodka is not)
but the alcohol de-hydrates you which means the normal breakdown of the carbs can be effected due to all the water being used to deal with the alcohol and other poisons in the beer. After a lot of beer you feel hungry due to a lack of appropriate energy giving sugars in the blood so you have a kebab or a burger or fish and chips

you then get energy from the fat
and the carb energy is left as excess again and eventually gets stored as human fat .

hence the beer belly sitauation drink lots and set yourself up not to function properly for 12 -24 hours after each session.

the older you get the more likley a woman is to go potatoe shaped. storeing fat on the outside.
and a bloke gets it on the belly and stuffed inside around all of his organs and in his liver

fatty liver is to be avoided.

i had my ass well and truly kicked by a nice lady Dr. at my last medical hence my change of diet.
she was pleased becasue she saw me at 40 as a saveable case of obese middle age , heading for heart attack or diabetese.

for this i thank her

I ate a balanced diet but i consumed enough for 2 people, hence 5 foot 11 and closing in on 18 stone.

now about 14 and hopfully heading for 12-13

men carry weight better its all on then inside we are not set up with the same kind of insulation on the outside as a woman who was going to spend all her time collecting berries and sitting in the cave looking after the kids

hence you can look reasonable in a suit standing at the bar but you are no better off health wise than the lass who is wider than the 1 armed bandit in the corner.. she knows she's carrying too much weight (of the wrong type) many men do not. Hence many mean keel over and cark it when least expecting too. escpecially if their job is collecting berries not hunting mamoths.

it worries me that i collect berries

Thats it in a nut shell Dave.

Extra Virgine Olive Oil on your salad too, as we know its the firs pressing of the Olive and has all the goodness as well as fat breaking enzymes. People go on holiday and put on weight by the time they get back, and the poor old Olive Oil gets the blame coz its on everything . Not so. What about all the ice creams, drinks, laying on the beach and all the extra free food if your full board or all inclusive we forget about the overindulgence

yeah olives have a type of cholesterol in them that actually helps you control the bad cholesterol from animal fats.

and milk has calcium compounds in it that stop you even absorbing some of the animal fats. it makes you do greasy poos which is also considerd good hence my comment about piles the other day :)

couple of types of cholesterol,

in balance and not too high OK

low but out of balance bad...potential to run away in th wrong direction

low but in balance just great

you need the oily fish and the olives

you need cholesterol

you actually don't need huge quantities of antioxidants (that just supresses action of your white cells, if they don't have chlorine in their weapons chest your immune system is affected anti oxidants mop up free radicals like chlorine and turn them into salts, throwing salt at an invader is rubbish chlorine has to be better )

altogether now

he will have a mackrel when the boat comes in etc

eating road kill and twigs is the only way :)
