Dirty Carb

Post by Demon James »

I stripped down my Eddy carb this morn and found a paper thin ally disc rattling around in one of the float chambers, looked like a bit of waste from casting, nothing broken and no holes :dontknow: But I also found quite a bit of sandy type stuff in the chamber oppposite the pre-pump chamber, not sure what it is or where it came from as the see through fuel filter appears very clean :? Having never taken a carb appart before I dont really know what to expect.

Any how, enough babling, what I really wanted to know is what does the small brass coloured disc do (picture with my hand in) as one of them had fallen out and was just resting in the gap (picture of the carb).

I put it back in but cant see how its fixed, now I've gently pushed it back it wont come out even tapping it so I'm guessing it will hold? :dontknow:

Also, one of the stubby needle/valves that open when the float drops was stuck up, is this also under pressure during normal use and therefore could have been working ok? I polished the sides of this needle and it now falls every time just like the other side.

Hi James
Have you got a rebuild kit for it yet? USAutos have em in stock and you really need one if you've found probs like that inside.
Get one and read it before you carry on. You can download an Edelbrock AFB manual from their website as a PDF, its very good.
As for the dirt, just small particles that your weedy lil 'filter' can't cope with.......... get a proper aluminium one with a screw on filter bowl and a decent element and flow rate. I got some at work if you want one ;)

Common fault with mass produced castings these days. Individual parts are not inspected well enough before assembly. Everything is made as fast and as cheap as possible. I have taken apart, cleaned, inspected and rebuilt every carb I ever fitted to any of my cars since 1982.
But I also found quite a bit of sandy type stuff in the chamber oppposite the pre-pump chamber,
Again common. That is where the dirt that gets through the filter collects. Shows how good your filter is. But it could also be sand from the casting when new if the bits are as big as sand.

The clear see-through filters are considered dangerous as apparently they can fracture. Never seen one do it myself though.

It is a type of core plug I expect. Like the core plugs on your engine block that people mistakenly think are there for protection against freezing (and call them freeze plugs) when in fact the holes are needed for the casting process.

They are supposed to be a tight pressed fit. The carb will not work correctly with it out so make sure it is in there for good. Stake the opening around it in a few places to make sure it stays there.
Also, one of the stubby needle/valves that open when the float drops was stuck up, is this also under pressure during normal use and therefore could have been working ok? I polished the sides of this needle and it now falls every time just like the other side.
It was stuck and needs to move up and down freely for correct operation. You did the right thing.

Hi James,

here is the link to the carb manual that Ade suggests reading....I took his advice and it is a very well written guide. If I can understand it anyone can mate!! Good luck,

Cheers Steve :read2:

PS, if its a performer carb, the rebuild kit is part no 1477

Cheers Steve, I printed some of that lot out last night, What did I find today amongst a load of paperwork for the car? The Edelbrock Manual   So now with a vat of tea and biccys I will read up to become a Carburetor Jedi Master  or more likely just try and understand what all the springy, tubey roddy things do

I totally agree with the cheapy casting issues Dave, especially with my experience with Edelbrock RE: my inlet manifold

Thanks for all the responses on this, really appreciated as it gives me the confidence to "have a go" and learn :thumbright: :thumbright: :thumbright:
