How nice is this,,340 moter ,races in the Swedish Stock and Superstock series.... Nice little moter , why the f.,k are we incapable of building a car like this in England,,,why do we all have to go the back halfed knobby big moter route..Is it because we all suffer from small man syndrome???

Pete, dont forgot Jon Connolly's litle Valiant from a few years back. Ran 9s on a 408 small block as i recall.
I know what you mean in general though. I also admired the 'Green Brick' Valiant that 'Mopar Action' magazine ran a few years ago.

The Answer is simple Pete....its not about being incapable, its just that we do not, and never really have taken on USA class rules like the Swedes do.
If you got no rules to build a car to, it ain't gonna happen, and we get cars built to whats in fashion at the moment....and that is now strokers, and b/halving.
Yours is a valiant attempt at getting Super Stock type cars together, but its never really gonna work "Properly"....all you can do is have a bit of fun which is fine, and I'm all for that, but proper racing with cars built to a class...unfortunately not in this country, or at least I can't see it happening.
If it did, I would seriously consider building a car to a proper set of rules.

as an example this coronet used to run 11.2,s at very best mostly 3,s 4,s
it had superstock springs and comp eng 90-10 shox, 11" tire
geezer got it backhalved 4 link big tire and it now runs 10,7,s consistant and i reckon could go better with a proper driver i am sure the geezer never really leaned on it
a good half second improvement,

I doubt if my '69 would've run 10.7 on mtr with only around 490 flywheel hp without being b/halved, 200lbs+? weight saving/big slicks etc.
However, it is still possible to do it on springs, you just gotta be a bit trick, look at Micks Dart, now there's a good advert for an SS car, .....and what about your spring cars Dunc.
I agree with Pete in the sense that going back to old style SS spring cars etc. would be the way to go, as you can define a quick car according to weight brakes/hp and class if those rules applied., its all about running 7's or 8's with Turbo's now, it just makes it all pointless in a way, if you ain't got that sort of ££'s, a genuinely fast well set up 9 sec car for whats in it means nothing much any more.

And in actual fact, having thought about it more and to the comments I just made previous about 8 sec cars, I'm with you on this.
B/halved cars are fine, but lets go back to basics with springs and make people work and think about chassis set up, it works ok.
It worked fine on my 340 running either 12.4 or 11.01, and at a higher level is Mick as I said before...600hp..1.40 60's...nothing wrong with that....use the brain, and give your wallet a rest, bring it back to the average guy without full workshop facilities or the money to pay someone 10k to b/half a car.
Its just that there ain't too many of the more faster sub 11 sec competitors left with springs on their cars I guess, so you gotta let some of the others in for now?....early days

I met a guy back in the 80's at St Louis dragstrip running a 70 Challenger in the nines with leaf springs and a Doug Nash 5 speed.....beautiful car, lots of daylight under the front end on launch
