figures worked out weight/ ET/mph...+/- a few hp either way.
that tells you something I guess about the 340!

Les
My stock 440 with .570 solid cam and dual plane intake and 964cfm carb = 520hp.
That tells me you know more about 340s than you do about 440s! :D

'69 440 weighed around 3000 with me....'71 340 was around 3500 with me
the ET is irrelevant here, different cars...I'm on about HP, and the 340's capability to make more HP p/ci in stock form with just a cam, compared to a stock 440 with a similar Cam but only a few more hp but with + 100 cubes and rpms were very similar at Top, so its not the case that I was screaming the SB.

That may be the case....I'm no Guru on either, I can only tell you what I ran with both cars and the end result.... if you made 520 hp in a 3700lb car, don't know the weight?, guessing, you would've run 11.20's at around 120mph.....we all like to over estimate hp levels?

Nah the car was nearly 4000lbs, built for handling not straight lines, and only made around 450hp at the rear wheels. So it was only running around 11.9-12.2. Which is what I designed it to do from the outset because back when I started a 12 second car was a fast street car.

By the time I got it finished things had moved on a bit...

371 bhp from just replacing a few bits?! Pretty chuffed I'd say!

I know what you mean.. a 12sec car was fast back then but things changed quickly!!.

Yes at 3950lbs all in 450hp is 12.0's at around 112>113mph. However not sure about that being rwhp....reckon its fly..........

If you say its rw....My 340 made 365rwhp (which I doubt very much) and the 440 made 390rwhp..don't think so from a factory rating of 375 fly with just a big cam.

You know where I'm coming from on this though Dave, the 340 can make more...hp/ci...than a 440 in stock form with just a Cam.

I don't wanna dash all you guys hopes of your hp estimates BUT.

It is still about torque.

I remember going heads-up against Kev in his 318 taxi in my 440 +6 'Cuda. I think that was pre-low gear set and the taxi could not match the R/B.

All that changed when he hit the bottle and got the gears right (torque again!)

Sam its not just replacing a few bits, well actually it is.....but its matching those few bits up carefully that are designed to work together well for maximum hp at a certain rpm level.

Just 1 example, most people ran 1/5/8" small tube headers on SB's, I bought a tailored set of Hedman 1/3/4" race chassis headers with tuned length....all makes a difference.

Yes Pete, it is about torque for the 1/4, thats what gets you fast 60ft's and ultimately ET, but your missing the point.....

All I'm trying to point out is the 340's capability in stock form with just a Cam to make more hp p/ci than the 440, not a question of torque, or winning races, its purely the hp that the SB can make from its size compared to the 440 in similar state of tune.

Here it is again..don't you guys get what I'm on about

my stock CR 340 with just a .590 cam single plane and 850DP = 371hp at around 6000rpm

my stock CR 440 with .650 solid cam, single plane and same 850DP = 398hp at around 6000rpm
so roughly only 20 odd hp less but with a 100ci = 1639cc less
