Power steering advice

Post by Charged67 »

Just checked the power steering fluid and its bone dry again! The car is not on the road and has only been moved back and forth on the drive twice in the last 6 months. I filled it up a while back and I can't see any leakage on the crossmember or floor.

What's the best option- rebuild kit or new pump? Is it an easy job?

Thanks in advance

Are you sure it is the pump that is leaking and not the box - best check thoroughly...and pipes / connectors too!!!

Seems strange that you are losing fluid but no evidence of it leaking out of the system!!?

Maybe worth starting her up and turning the steering wheel from lock to lock to make sure all the air is out of the system (box and pump). Then top her up and if you are still losing fluid you must have a leak. Steering without the engine running will force fluid out of the cap on the pump but you would see it, surely?? I did..

Fluid cant just vanish without leaving a puddle under the car so maybe its gone into filling the box if that was dry for any reason? When I had a leak in my steering box, it didnt take much fluid loss to give the inside of the pump the illusion that it was empty but in fact it had just dropped down behind the actual pump in the reservoir. It doesnt always drop onto the floor under the box or pump either.....mine ran along the bottom of the car and dripped out near the transmission, scary as its the same fluid!!!

If you need a new pump, I got mine off the shelf at Stateside Autos and eventually a new box for £165 all in....not worth messing with a rebuild at that price. Remember to pull the pulley off the pump with a puller from the centre and not the edge or it will buckle and also use a puller to get the pitman arm off, not a ball joint splitter or hammer etc or you will wreck it.....Ive got a puller you can borrow if it comes to changing the pump or the box

Good luck and cheers
