It could be a siezed caliper on the left front . If the caliper is dragging slightly it would cause the car to want to steer left when driving straight but when the brakes are applied you get no movement fron the left caliper and the right one does all the work causing the vehicle to steer right. Get the car down to an MOT station and put it on their brake rollers they will be able to check how much bind there is. HTH

What Guy said.

But also!

The steering on these cars has often been messed with.

It is important that the steering box is centered exactly (turn to turn) and then the steering and front wheels all centered by adjusting the track rods.

If the steering box is not centered when the front wheels at pointed straight ahead you get a lot more play in the steering and the car will wander more.

Front brake adjustment does make helluva difference. also check tyre pressures.
Purely from memory here, Im sure the steering wheel wasnt put on straight anyway!

Read my post again.

You center the steering and then center the steering wheel with the tie-rods.

From memory I think the steering wheel was splined most years so it will only fit on one way.

Use a puller to get it off and have a look if you want but you should maintain it in the factory position.

As Dave says, the steering column is splined, but can only go on in one position. Think he meant track rods though. Unsure about the wheel itself.
Brakes are dead easy to do and the adjusters are nice and free, if in doubt keep road testing till you get it right.
