Found out the other day my trolley jack isn't working anymore...it jacks up fine but then goes back down again
To be honest I could do without having to buy another one. I assume it is probably a seal (there was enough oil in it)?
I took the cylinder out (picture), and I do have an exploded diagram of the guts, I was planning to rebuild it myself but if this is going to be a days work I just can't justify the time - I might just have to bite the bullet and buy another.
Any advice - could I hand this unit over and have someone rebuild it for much less than a new one? Or is it easy to rebuild myself? Or what is a good price and model for a new one?

I've been wondering what to do about mine too. Mine goes up and stays up, but only 2/3 as high as it used to. I've tried adding fluid but it doesn't help.
Seal kits might be available,looks like a generic Chinese job. Pull it apart and take the lot to a hydraulic specialist who should be able to match the seals.
Newport100 may have seal kits? I'm sure the Sealey jack is the same guts and they do parts.

Nearly all those far eastern built hydraulic jacks, pallet trucks etc, can be fixed easy enough. Draper do seal kits for the pallet trucks but not all the floor jacks, only a cost thing cos the trucks cost 10 times that of an economy jack.
Steves got the best solution, go to your local fluid engineering supplier and get the seals from them
I had the same happen with my engine hoist piston. Bought a seal kit from Clarke and repaired it myself. Took an hour or so, inluding bleeding the air (recommended 30 pumps with weight on the cylinder/hoist). I had to re-hone the master piston cylinder as there were a few scratches but have got a small bore hone kit for this. It is now back in rude health and providing sterling service on loan within a privateer race team (engines and gearbox removals seem to be a regular thing). Seal kit cost about a fiver I think.
Get the seals matched and do it yourself! Let me know if you need any honing tools.

When you say a hydraulic specialist or a fluid eng supplier, what should I be looking for - are we talking people like Pirtek etc,
Or any recommendations in the Herts or Essex area?

Thanks guys, and thanks Blue for that tip. I've actually disassembled the rest now, but I think I'll call the place you mention and see if they sell the seals etc (or maybe even if they want to reassemble, at least it would be tested then)
Now it's apart I can see that I probably didn't need to 100% disassemble it - the steel balls, springs etc are unlikely to be the problem (not that it was particularly time consuming). There are two oil seals as well on the two pistons which again weren't leaking so probably not the problem. Altogether there are about 4 or 5 o-rings and 'backup rings' as they call them (plastic washer....) so I guess they are the most likely culprit.
Well we'll see I guess.........unfortunately it is holding up my moving the leaf springs inboard......never simple is it???
